How the PDF to text converter works

A PDF stores text as thousands of small positioned fragments, not as paragraphs. This tool reads every fragment with pdf.js, then reconstructs the page the way your eyes do: fragments that share the same vertical position are grouped into a line and sorted left to right, a space is inserted where there is a visible horizontal gap, and a blank line is inserted where the page shows a paragraph-sized vertical gap. The result is clean, readable plain text that follows the printed reading order.

Pages are processed in order and separated by page-break markers, so long documents stay navigable. The preview box shows the full extraction, the counters give you page, character, word and line totals, and you can copy everything to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file named after your document.

One honest limitation: this tool reads the PDF's text layer. Scanned documents are images without a text layer, so they produce little or no output; the tool detects that situation and tells you rather than returning an empty file. Because extraction runs entirely on your device, sensitive documents like contracts and statements never leave your browser.

Tips for best results

SituationWhat to do
Scanned or photographed PDFGet the original digital PDF, or use an OCR tool; scans have no text layer to extract
Multi-column layout (newspapers, papers)Text follows printed position, so columns may interleave; check the preview before copying
Need the data as a tableFor bank statements specifically, use the Bank Statement Converter linked below instead
Very long documentNothing needed. All pages are processed and the .txt includes page-break markers

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract text from a PDF?

Drop a digital PDF onto the upload area. The tool reads the text layer, reconstructs lines from their on-page coordinates, preserves paragraph and page breaks, and shows the result in a preview box. Copy it or download it as .txt.

Why does my PDF produce little or no text?

Scanned PDFs are images with no text layer, so there is nothing to extract. The tool detects this and warns you. Text-based PDFs (exported from Word, a website or an app) extract perfectly.

Are line breaks and columns preserved?

Lines are reconstructed from text positions, so reading order and line breaks match the printed page closely. Paragraph-sized vertical gaps become blank lines, and pages are separated by page-break markers.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Extraction happens 100% in your browser with pdf.js. Your document never leaves your device, and the tool works offline once loaded.

What can I do with the extracted text?

Copy it into an email, notes app or AI chat, or download it as a .txt for archiving, searching or feeding into other tools. No page limit, no quota.
