How to add or remove GST in New Zealand

New Zealand GST is a flat 15%. To add GST to a net price, multiply by 1.15: a NZ$100 job becomes NZ$115 including GST. To remove GST from a price that already includes it, divide by 1.15: NZ$115 ÷ 1.15 = NZ$100 net, with NZ$15 of GST.

A handy cross-check: the GST component of a GST-inclusive price is exactly 3/23 of the total (because 15/115 simplifies to 3/23). On NZ$230 inclusive, the GST is NZ$30.

Most goods and services are taxed at 15%. A small set of supplies is zero-rated, such as exported goods and services, and some are exempt, such as financial services, residential rent and donated goods sold by non-profits. Businesses must register for GST once taxable turnover reaches NZ$60,000 in any 12-month period.
