How sales tax works across Canada
Canada layers a 5% federal GST with provincial taxes, and the combination depends on where the sale happens. Five provinces harmonised their provincial tax with the GST into a single HST: Ontario at 13%, and Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island at 15%. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba kept a separate PST charged on top of the 5% GST, while Alberta and the three territories charge GST only. Quebec pairs the 5% GST with its own QST of 9.975%.
To add tax, multiply the net price by (1 + combined rate/100): a C$100 item in Ontario totals C$113. To remove tax from an inclusive total, divide by the same factor: C$113 ÷ 1.13 = C$100. In British Columbia the factor is 1.12 (5% GST + 7% PST), because both taxes are calculated on the net price.
Quebec is the exception: QST is charged on the price including GST, so the taxes compound. A C$100 item picks up C$5.00 GST, then QST of 9.975% on C$105.00, which is C$10.47, for a total of C$115.47. The combined effective rate is 15.47375%.
Sales tax rates by province and territory

| Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI | HST | 15% |
| Quebec | GST 5% + QST 9.975% (QST on GST-inclusive price) | 15.47375% effective |
Some PST exemptions and point-of-sale rebates exist (for example children's clothing or books in certain provinces). This calculator applies the general rates only.
Frequently asked questions
What is HST?
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) merges the 5% federal GST with a provincial portion into one tax. Ontario charges 13%; Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15%.
Which provinces use HST versus GST plus PST?
HST: Ontario (13%) and NS, NB, NL, PE (15%). GST plus a separate PST: British Columbia (7%), Saskatchewan (6%) and Manitoba (7% RST). GST only: Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. Quebec charges GST plus 9.975% QST.
How do I remove HST from a total?
Divide the inclusive total by 1 plus the rate: C$113 ÷ 1.13 = C$100 net in Ontario, and divide by 1.15 in a 15% HST province. For GST+PST provinces divide by 1 plus both rates (1.12 in BC, 1.11 in Saskatchewan). Switch this calculator to "Remove tax" mode to do it automatically.
How is QST calculated in Quebec?
QST of 9.975% applies to the price including GST: on C$100, GST is C$5.00 and QST is 9.975% of C$105.00 = C$10.47, totalling C$115.47. The combined effective rate is 15.47375%.
