How to write an amount in words on a cheque

Banks read the words, not the figures, when the two disagree, so the words line has to be exact. Start with the currency name, write the whole amount, add the fraction if there is one, and finish with the word Only so nothing can be appended: Rupees Two Lakh Fifty Thousand and Fifty Paise Only. Draw a line through any space left over on the words line, and make sure the figures box carries the same amount, 2,50,000.50 in this case. The "Rupees ... Only" style above produces exactly this form; the "... Rupees" style is the ordinary written form used in letters and contracts.

The same rules apply to invoices, receipts and legal agreements, where the amount in words is the binding figure. Indian tax invoices normally carry the grand total in words, which is why this converter defaults to rupees and the lakh and crore system. Switch to the international system and a different currency for a US, UK, Australian or Canadian document.

The two systems agree up to 99,999 and part ways at the sixth digit. Indian grouping puts a comma after the first three digits and then every two, which is why 12,345,678 reads as 1,23,45,678 and as One Crore Twenty Three Lakh Forty Five Thousand Six Hundred and Seventy Eight. Government budgets and company accounts in India usually stay in lakhs and crores even for very large sums, so "One Lakh Crore" is normal usage rather than a mistake.

Plain-number mode reads digits after the decimal point one at a time ("Three Point One Four"), which is how measurements and version numbers are spoken. Amount mode rounds to two decimal places and names the minor unit instead. Need the figure on a document? Frequently asked questions

How do you write 1 lakh in words?

One lakh is written as One Lakh in the Indian system and as One Hundred Thousand in the international system. The figure is 1,00,000 with Indian grouping or 100,000 with international grouping. On a cheque it becomes Rupees One Lakh Only.

What is the difference between the Indian and international number systems?

Both systems agree up to 99,999. Above that the international system counts in millions and billions (groups of three digits), while the Indian system counts in lakhs and crores (groups of two digits after the first three). Ten lakh is one million, one crore is ten million, and one hundred crore is one billion.

How do I write paise or cents in words?

Write the whole units first, then the word and, then the fraction as a number of paise or cents: Rupees Two Hundred and Fifty Paise Only, or Two Hundred Dollars and Fifty Cents. Amounts are rounded to two decimal places first, so 10.005 becomes ten and one cent.

Should I write the word and after hundred?

British and Indian usage includes it (One Hundred and Five); American usage leaves it out (One Hundred Five). Both are understood everywhere, so match the convention of the document you are filling in. The converter switches it on for the Indian system and off for the international system, and you can override it either way.

Is this number to words converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and the conversion happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
