How to use this bill of sale template
Pick the sale type first: the form switches to the fields that matter for that item. A vehicle asks for the VIN, make, model, year and odometer reading; a boat asks for the hull identification number (HIN) and length; a firearm asks for make, model, caliber and serial number; general property takes a plain description and an optional serial number. Add the seller and buyer, the date and price, adjust the as-is clause if needed, and download the filled PDF. Prefer pen and paper? The blank template button produces the same document with empty lines.
The state selector adds a short guidance note, for example which states notarize the title assignment and which DMV forms are commonly used. These notes cover the ten most populous states and a general fallback; they are starting points, not legal advice.
Signatures: both parties should sign and keep a copy each. For vehicles, remember the bill of sale does not transfer the title by itself: the seller signs the title over, the buyer registers it at the DMV, and federal law requires an odometer disclosure for most vehicle transfers.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bill of sale legally binding?
Generally yes: signed by both parties, it is evidence of the sale contract covering what was sold, the price, the date and the condition. For vehicles and boats it supports, but does not replace, the title transfer at the DMV.
Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?
Usually not the bill of sale itself, but several states (including Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina) require the vehicle title assignment to be notarized, and special rules can apply to boats and firearms. Check the state note under the form, then confirm with your DMV.
What should a bill of sale include?
Names and addresses of both parties, a clear item description (VIN, HIN or serial number as appropriate), sale date and price, an as-is clause, and both signatures. This template covers all of those.
